Russula pseudolepida Singer. Cap 3-8cm across, firm; bright scarlet to pinkish red; dry, subpruinose to velvety; hardly peeling. Gills rather crowded, occasionally forking; cream-white. Stem 30-60 x 10-15mm, firm, rigid, equal; white flushed in part with vivid rose-red; dry. Flesh firm; white. Odor nil. Taste mild. Spores subglobose, 7-9.5 x 6.3-8µ; warts up to 1.3µ high, almost no connectives. Deposit pale yellow (D-E). Habitat in mixed woods. Found in eastern North America. Season August-September. Edibility not known. Comment This species differs from Russula lepida Fr. mostly in spore characters; the latter has spores with low (up to 0.5µ high) warts and rather extensive reticulum. |
